Crafting the Perfect Magic Mushroom Substrate: A Recipe for Success

Embarking on the journey of cultivating magic mushrooms opens the door to a world of experimentation with various magic mushroom substrate recipes. From elaborate setups to simple DIY solutions, cultivators often explore a plethora of techniques to find what works best for them. In my own journey, I’ve delved into several approaches including using a covered 5-gallon bucket sitting overnight in search of the perfect recipe for magic mushroom substrate.

One method that has stood out among the rest for its ease and reliability is the recipe I’m excited to share with you today. After numerous trials and adjustments, I’ve honed in on a technique that consistently yields the desired results, offering both simplicity and effectiveness in mushroom cultivation. With this magic mushroom substrate recipe, you can prepare it the day you plan to move your mycelium to the substrate and mono tub.

Ingredients

  • Brick of coco coir (650g)
  • 8 cups vermiculite or perlite (if using perlite, use 3.5 quarts water as it does not absorb water like vermiculite)
  • 3.5 – 4 quarts (14 – 16 cups) boiling water
  • One oven-safe container like a large roasting pan or water bath.
  • Aluminum foil
  • Optional: 1 cup worm casings and 1/2 cup gypsum

Directions

  • Gather ingredients.
  • Start boiling the water immediately, which is the longest step. magic mushroom substrate
  • Preheat the oven to 180 degrees. Ensure the oven-safe container fits before heating.
  • Combine the coco coir (no need to break it up) in the large oven-safe container, vermiculite, and/or worm casings and gypsum. I use a water bath pot which gives me plenty of room to mix the ingredients once cooled.
  • Pour the boiling water over the coco coir. Notice the earthy smell and enjoy the beginnings of your magic mushroom substrate process. magic mushroom substrate
  • Cover with aluminum foil.
  • Bake covered for 2 hours at 180-degree. magic mushroom substrate
  • Remove from oven and vent the aluminum foil.
  • Completely cool the mixture for approximately 1-2 hours, and then thoroughly mix the ingredients. Note: heat will destroy the mycelium, so it must be cooled before combining with the spawn.
  • Once mixed, perform a drip test to verify the correct moisture content.
