Minimum Supplies For Spore Prints

• Aluminum foil cut into 4×2 squares. Does not have to be perfect but must be big enough to hold the cap of a mushroom and enough left over to fold over and protect the print.
• Airtight container big enough to hold the mushrooms and foil.
• Sterile Environment

Instructions for spore prints

To harvest and make spore prints, it is best to do so when the veil of the mushroom is just starting to break open. You can use your hands or scissors to remove the stems of the mushrooms. A rotating method with your hand is recommended. It is important to maintain a sterile environment while handling the mushrooms. Place the mushrooms with the gills or pores facing down onto a piece of foil. Then, cover the mushrooms with a container to create an airtight seal. Let the mushrooms remain covered for a few hours up to 24 hours, depending on how fresh they are. To remove the mushroom cap, use a toothpick or another device, being careful not to move the mushroom too much on the foil. You should be left with a beautiful print of the mushroom cap gills. Seal in the foil, place in a ziplock bag and store in a cool dark place until ready to use. You can now dehydrate the mushroom cap or use it as you normally would.

Uses for Spore Prints

• Artwork: Spray the completed spore prints with artist’s clear varnish. (Hair lacquer is not as good, but it’s a lot better than nothing.) Instead of using foil, paper or glass is recommended.
